Battlefield 2 and my GeForce 4 Ti4200
I’ve recently got back into Battlefield 1942, it has really come on leaps and bounds with each patch and is now smooth to play, even at 1024×768 on my Geforce 4 Ti4200.
I really enjoyed playing a modern warfare mod that was developed for BF1942, the name escapes me but that’s not the point, it was a modern warfare type of mod with Apache’s, A-10 Tankbusters etc. I became a bit of a dab hand with the Apache’s so with the recent release of Battlefield 2 which is a modern warfare sequel to BF1942 I stumped up the cash and bought the game figuring that my Ti4200 might struggle but would still work. It worked for everything else; Far Cry to Doom 3, Call Of Duty and Medal Of Honour: Pacific Assault so why shouldn’t it work on Battlefield 2 I ask myself? No need to actually CHECK the requirements I think… nooo.
Erm… oops! It seems that support for the Geforce 4 series of cards has been completely omitted from BF2 so I’m forced to upgrade. I’m trying to keep it quiet (good luck now!) that I’ve just bought an Inno 3d nVidia 6800GT with 256MB DDR3 memory from here. Mainly because I’m trying to pay off credit card bills that I accrued over my disastrous holiday in Mexico which, I might add, is STILL causing Rachael issues. She’s now back in hospital despite being given the all-clear on Tuesday afternoon but that’s another post that I’ll get back to in the future.
I bought a £26.99 game and when I came to run it last night it just kept dropping back to desktop. Some feverish requirements-reading moments after meant I then went and spent ten times the cost of the game on a new graphics card just to play the thing – how insane is that? Still, it’s tempting to now re-play Doom 3 and actually bother to have a go at Half-Life 2. I’m not so sure Rachael will be too pleased about this series of events but remember honey, I love you! 🙂
Anyway, I’ve continued to investigate the whole “no support” on the Geforce 4’s this morning and came across this forum where some gamers have also discovered this “issue”: http://www.hothardware.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=22&threadid=28202
I admit I was a bit of a plonker for not reading the requirements so I hold my hand up and say – “lesson learned, OK?”
Afternoon Chief.
I see you’ve got the whole ‘blog’ thing sorted then…? Yet another thing to add to your growing list of PHP skills. Care to share a few more? I might be needing a few tips and tricks pretty soon…I got the job at femalefirst.co.uk helping to update, maintain, and come up with a few new ideas. 12months – paid – doing something I enjoy…laffin lid.
Oh oh…I also noticed that you’re taking advantage of the fact Rae isn’t well 😉 *cough* Battlefield *cough* hehe. Only joking.
I might be needing to borrow that game if its anything in comparison with MOHAA? Although, I might not have the permission off oh master Jonathan….
Had exactly the same problem. Bought BF2 only to find it doesn’t work.
Bought from the supermarket and they were stored in these thick plastic anti-theft boxes, and the wordings saying the list of supported gfx cards was almost illegible.
Do I take it back, spend more dosh on a card.
I guess it all depends on whether or not you can afford it?
Saying that, upgrading is always the best way to go – just think of all those other games released in the next year that won’t have support for GF4 chipsets!
